Dog Bite Fatalities Down Last Year, but no biggie

Karen Delise, author and director of the National Canine Research Council, reported recently that the numbers of dog bite fatalities went down to 23 in 2008 from 34 in 2007. But, she points out, this is not something new. Fluctuations have happened in past years as well.

One thing to remember is that given the ratio of human population to that of dogs, dog bites, fatal or not, are very rare. Of course, her book, “Fatal Dog Attacks: The Stories Behind the Statistics” has more on that, as does the book, “Dogs Bite: but Balloons and Slippers are More Dangerous“, by Janis Bradley (both are recommended by this blogger).

Compare that thought to how we treat dogs and dog owners in legislation these days. Always keep reality in mind, and common sense values intact, when arguing about dog law.

Regardless, our most powerful weapon against dog bites is simple, free education, especially for parents and children, then dog owners, legislators, and the rest of the general public.
